"Sure, you hear a voice, but what you really hear is a heart."
~ Joel Dorn, Grammy Award Winning Record Producer

Music

Sharyn's introduction to music began at age four. She had fallen down the stairs while playing with her doll. The doll shattered and she began to cry. Her father lifted her into his arms and sang "Smile." At that point, Sharyn fell in love with music. And inside, she knew in her heart that she knew music. Unfortunately, a casual remark from a grown-up (her own mother, no less) that she had a “squeaky voice” hindered her from expressing it until many years later. That comment, while not intended to be hurtful, caused the music within Sharyn to retreat for much of her childhood.

The Music Emerges

Still, as a kid, Sharyn would dance to the music of Dick Clark's "American Bandstand." The music within was starting to come out. As a young teen, she could be seen on the set of the Dick Clark Show. At 16, she discovered jazz and tuned into "W.H.A.T." radio, Friday with Frank. On Saturdays, she would listen to radio announcer Joel Dorn, who played some of the greatest jazz she had ever heard… but Sharyn wanted to hear jazz live.

She started frequenting jazz clubs in Philly like "Showboat" and "Peps" where she listened to the intimate performances of Lambert Hendrix & Ross, Mose Allison, Thelonious Monk, Sarah Vaughan, Betty Carter and other jazz greats.

A Dream to Fulfil

At the turn of the millennium - and especially after 9/11 - Sharyn realized how fleeting life is and how precious each moment is to us all. She was compelled to look deeply into herself and ask if there was something else she always wanted to do, that had not yet been realized. The passionate answer was, "to be a torch singer of romantic standards". With that, her journey officially began, and she started taking singing lessons. Her teacher, as it turned out, would perform nightly, and it wasn’t long before Sharyn started attending these sessions with him so that she could listen and absorb as much as possible. To her surprise, one day her teacher called her up on to the stage and handed her the microphone. Excited to finally be free of the shell that had encompassed her during childhood, Sharyn sang.

A Dream Fulfilled

When her friends in the entertainment world, who had primarily known Sharyn for her acting, learned that she was now making a name for herself as a jazz singer, they wanted to help. The doors opened up and Sharyn was introduced to various contacts in the world of music: producers, studio representatives, and more. Once they heard her sound, the stars aligned, and this has led to the album “Reflections of Love.”

To anyone else who feels - or has been told - that they can't sing, Sharyn would encourage you to think otherwise. Sharyn would say: "Change your story, change your life."

"My favorite album by any artist is their first one. It's the only one that combines whatever artistry there is with the innocence of a reach for the stars. For as long as I've known Sharyn, she's wanted to sing. Not to make a million dollars or to become famous, but for the pure joy of singing. Sure, you hear a voice, but what you really hear is a heart."

~ Joel Dorn, Grammy Award Winning Record Producer
